In the 1890s the "Katoomba Coal and Shale Company" created one of the world’s first aerial ropeway systems for the transport of coal and shale in the Blue Mountains.
Its buckets each carried loads of 300kgs and travelled 3.6km passing by 200m tall cliffs along the way. After six months of operation and the successful transportation of 20,000 tons of coal and shale the structure collapsed. Some parts were salvaged but most still remain in the valley where they fell almost 120 years ago.
The area is now a World Heritage site recognised for its diversity, history and integrity of the forest.
